I committed to joining the “Vote Carl Crawford to the 2010 All-Star Game” about a week ago. It actually was just a simple click and vote application, but little did I know I would get pushed into the realm of awesome adrenaline that follows campaigning for one of the top tier outfielders in Major League Baseball. So I did my usual activities of emailing friends, ex-friends, friend’s of friends and maybe even a few hundred of my followers on my social networks from Myspace, Facebook and even Twitter.
I generally stop at that juncture in the process, but then I got an email from MLB.com that told me I had elevated my campaigning game to be considered a Deputy Campaign Manager on Carl Crawford’s campaign. Now I know this is a voter regulated advertising concept from MLB’s Advance Media arm to excite and motivate previous voters to stay active in the MLB All-Star Game process, but I am taking the task in hand and starting to provide a small grass-roots level campaign to secure and assure that Carl Crawford will have his Rays Nike’s firmly in the Leftfield grass as a starter in the 2010 All-Star Game at Angels Stadium.
And I am not taking any credit for the current second place voting results, that was accumulated by the mass of Rays Republic members voting via the web and also poking out hundred of thousands of little holes in the in-stadium voting process that ended last weekend. But even with that segment of the voting completed, this is the time that voters need to readjust, refocus and recommit to finding additional ways for the public outside of Tampa Bay to vote for CC.
So I have formulated a three tiered voting attack (Land,Sea and Air) campaign to provide additional votes being cast for CC, and hopefully these are the votes needed to secure and execute our campaign’s main objective that CC be not only a member of the American League All-Star roster, but be firmly implanted into the starting outfield with the current trio of Texas Ranger OF Nelson Cruz and Seattle OF Ichiro Suzuki. Crawford showed the National audience in 2009 what we have known in Tampa Bay since 2002. It is not special if CC is not involved.
The “Land” segment of my campaign attack will focus on word of mouth and Tropicana Field discussions to promote the last minute harnessing of Crawford’s starting bid. It will entail the precision email bombing of everyone within the confines of my five email addresses, plus a few additional blaster email applications that target Tampa Bay residents. It is glorious in design as almost 300,000 people will open their emails to see Crawford’s dimples and a simple link to help ensure his rightful place on the grass in California.
The “Sea” format will have myself and a small crew of scantily clad Rays fans patrolling the beaches and Inter-coastal byways of Tampa Bay either on foot or my jet ski to carry a backpack full of specially produced Rays Renegade campaign propaganda materials aimed at getting voters to switch on their blackberries, mobile phones and maybe even a few WiFi induced items to vote for Crawford.
I am planning on pulling a small floating platform with a photo of C C’s amazing catch from the 2009 All-Star Game behind the jet ski with the wording ” Help CC catch onto the 2010 Al-Star Game”. Below his photo will be the
MLB.com link and on the beach will be my own crew of Carolina blue and Royal blue bikini-clad and surfer shorted campaign workers…The old guy (me) will be on the water as to not scare the kids or adults. The final section will be the “Air” assault. In this side of the three-pronged attack, I will use my former Karaoke disk jockey voice to produce a few 15 and 30 seconds humorous and fact inducing advertisements to persuade fans and voters to again attack the MLB polls and cast ballots with Crawford name. I will hold signs up at Rays games starting next week to further educate the public that it is not over, and that we can get a final heavy push of voting to firmly secure CC his spot oin the field.
Tom Gannam
I have also sent a few hundred emails through my blast email system to try and focus and coordinate some sort of timely motivation by the Talk Radio Nation to just take about 30 seconds talking about CC’s chances and remind voters that the MLB All-Star Game campaign is not over yet. We still have time to push Crawford farther away from Cruz, who is currently the third highest vote getter in the outfield trio. By pushing CC closer to Ichiro and farther ahead of Cruz, we can guarantee that Crawford will be standing in Leftfield wearing his American League All-Star jersey during the game.
I have done a few campaigns before as a college politician and also working on the grass roots campaigns of a few elected officials in my lifetime. The one turning point that people forget about is maintaining that momentum right up until the voting polls close. Some political teams work hard and mighty up to the voting day, but forget that a last minute impression could ultimately turn a voters’ mind if you have a solid and informed message for them.
Crawford is the right choice to be considered for the 2010 All-Star Game, and he will surely be one of the outfielder selected, but being a starter in this game can sometimes be more important than just being considered. So I am firmly committed and will move until totally exhausted both physically and mentally to get CC a starting spot on the field for the 2010 All-Star Game. I have always lived by the credo, “Go Big or Go Home”, and hopefully I can help secure a treasured memory and also the ultimate honor of being selected a starter for the All-Star squad.

It is the least I can do for all the great Crawford memories I have seen since 2002, and for the eventual triples leader among the active MLB players. It is down to crunch time now with less than two weeks left for the Tampa Bay and Rays Republic member to elevate Crawford to a new high and secure his spot in the All-Star Game…..So, can I get you to go to MLB.com and cast a few more ballots? You know you want to….

A three pronged attack – I wish you well General. Sounds like a solid plan to me. He’s had my vote the whole time. Nothing says vote better than a good carpet bombing! I mean e-mail bombing.

Mike,
Sometimes you got to break a few eggs to get the job done right. Or is that break a few egos.
Either way, the carpet bombong of my friends, neighbors and childhood friends will get the message out,
Hopefully thye will tell two friends, who will tell two friends…and so on until after another 14 days….CC is standing in Leftfield in Anaheim during the National Anthem.

Mimi,
Believe me, I got the program in full effect right now trying to secure a spot for Carl Crawford.
Got my cutest assistant’s ( friends of my friends daughter) ready to hit the beaches tomorrow, and got the jet ski ready for water action.
All I got to worry about now is the weather…..But I also have a few secondary (sports bar) visits if the rain does fall.

I love that you’re the deputy campaign manager! I may not vote for your candidate but I do admire your approach. And if Crawford wins, you should be rewarded with a free trip to the inauguration ….I mean the all star game.

That’s some fan dedication you got going on there! I can completely relate. You got me to do my part and vote for Crawford for you. Thanks for dropping by my modest blog and commenting. It’s appreciated! Barb

Jane,
Seriously, you do not have three outfielders that should go for the New York Yankees. You can just insert Carl Crawford’s name on your ballot with a click and a send and we will be the only one that knows you did it…..I promise.
Got to try and show CC some Tampa Bay love before the end of the season.
It still doesn’t feel like he only pooped up here in 2002 for the first time. Seems like CC has been here since the beginning.

Barb,
Some would call it a dedication, others would call it an obsession.
Depends on who you ask, a Rays fan or a Yankee/Red Sox fan (lol). I love hitting some of the new blogs, so you might just see me pop a comment on your posts again real soon.
I like to travel through the MLBlogsosphere daily. We have a huge amount of talent on here.

I admire your enthusiasm. Crawford’s one of the best players in the game, and still somehow manages to get overlooked. Unfortunately, to get my vote, he’d need to be having one of the best three seasons among AL outfielders… and Choo, Ichiro, and Rios have him beat in that area (not to mention Wells and Hamilton). But I’d certainly never be upset if CC was standing in left field in ANY game, especially the All-Star Game. Best of luck! -RoundRock15
RoundRock,
Out of that group you listed, only Josh Hamilton is currently even doing any duty in Leftfield. And he is not having a great season, but will get some consideration by NY Yankee Manager Joe G.
But if we let Joe G pick the reserves, he might absently forget that Carl Crawford runs circles around his current Leftfiel option, or the one in Boston. Crawford stepped into the spotlight with his catch of Rockies Brad Hawpe’s high hit ball to the Bullpen fence in 2009.
Hopefully Crawford can earn a chance to start the 2010 game and watch someone else, mayne even Hamilton make a similar catch in the later innings…..You never know in baseball.
